Abstract
The novus ordo missae was a transcendental event in the history of the contemporary Church, because it implied an important change of the Catholic mass. This research aims to determine how the liturgical reform of Paul VI was received in the city of Arequipa through the testimonies of the priests and parishioners who observed this transformation and participated in it. The interviews were collected in 2019 and the El Pueblo newspaper of the time was reviewed. This paper uses the methodology of cultural history to reconstruct the framework of sociocultural, philosophical and theological references that make the changes of the liturgical reform intelligible. Likewise, the emphasis on oral history allows us to document the impressions and perspectives of those who belonged to this process. As evidenced by the analysis of the sources consulted, the reform of the mass was implemented by the clergy and demanded from the exacerbation of the social over the spiritual, according to the mentality of catholics in the mid 20th century and of the current hegemonic theological tendencies after the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council.
