Resumen

Cultural consumption is refered to socio-cultural processes in which the appropriation and use of products are carried out in which the symbolic value prevails over those of use and change. This study seeks to identify the level and type of cultural consumption of undergraduate students of the Catholic University of Santa María in Arequipa, Peru. Using the quantitative-descriptive approach, a survey with 31 closed-type and multiple-choice questions was applied to 1,033 students from 26 professional schools. Among the results, it was identified that students define culture from its artistic, historical and traditional value as a reflection of a particular local identity, where women have greater cultural activity compared to men, being the cinema and music the activity more consumed Finally, it is concluded that the type of professional studies does not determine the level of cultural consumption, since students in the areas of Health Sciences and Engineering, have a higher cultural consumption unlike those of Social Sciences.
