N2 - In the various activities of daily life, both physical, sports and recreational, the contribution of aerobic capacity and muscular endurance are important protective factors for an adequate level of health. The objective of this work was to determine whether there was an association between the manifestations of muscular strength and the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) in university students. A descriptive correlational study was carried out in 2018. 98 university students (67 men and 31 women) were included. Weight, height, right and left-hand grip strength, abdominal muscle resistance test, arm flexion-extension and horizontal jump were evaluated. The Leger test was used for VO2max determination. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. A positive relationship was found between force manifestations and VO2max. With abdominal muscular endurance R2 = 0.20-0.27, with flexion-extension of the arms R2 = 0.15-0.16, and with horizontal jump R2 = 0.14-0.44. No correlation was observed between VO2max with manual grip strength of either hand and in any of the sexes. Young people classified as having a high level of VO2max (tertile 3) and moderate VO2max (tertile 2) presented significantly higher values of muscle strength than those classified as having a low VO2max (Tertile 1) in both sexes. It was concluded that VO2max is positively associated with manifestations of muscular strength, such as muscular endurance of the arms, abdominal muscular endurance and with the strength of the lower limbs in both sexes.
